Defined
- Failure to pay over public money;
- By a person charged with the collection, receipt, transfer, disbursement, or safekeeping of such money.
Potential Penalties
Depending on the amount of money involved in the embezzlement it can be treated as anything from a first-degree misdemeanor to a felony of the first degree. If the amount embezzled is over $1,500,000, then the violation is treated as a felony of the first degree, which can be punished by a prison sentence of up to 11 years and a fine of up to $20,000.
