Ohio's Point System

A traffic ticket is not a simple matter. Simply paying a traffic summons does not end the matter since the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) puts points on your license for most traffic infractions. Just two or three violations on your record can total up to enough points for you to lose your license. Depending on the type of citation, even one violation can cause you to lose your license. This is why it is important to defend yourself against a traffic summons even if it is only your first violation.

If you have received a traffic violation and would like more information about Ohio's point system, Contact Us today!

Some common traffic violations and their respective points include:

  • driving under the influence (DUI) – 6 points
  • vehicular homicide – 6 points
  • reckless operation – 4 points
  • running a red light – 2 points
  • disregard of traffic signs – 2 points
  • speeding – 2 points (varies depending on severity)
  • tailgating – 2 points
  • failure to yield – 2 points
  • u-turns – 2 points

If you accumulate 6 points on your license within a two-year period, you'll receive a warning letter. If you accumulate 12 or more points during that two-year period, your driving privileges will be suspended for six months. After that period, you'll need to enroll in traffic school courses and retake the driving test.
