Will Yellow Plates Help The Problem?

Under specific circumstances, Ohio laws now require use of yellow plates for drivers who have been convicted of DUI.  Convicted drivers are required to use these restricted plates when:

  • their BAC level exceeded .17%
  • they had a DUI conviction within the past 6 years
  • they refused to take the breathalyzer test and have a DUI conviction within the past 20 years

Many people believe that these bright yellow plates with red lettering will deter drunk driving simply because of shame.  Even though the amount of yellow plates issued went up from 4,709 in 2005 to 5,167 in 2007, the plates can still prove to be life changing.

The executive director of MADD Ohio, Doug Scoles, believes that the yellow plates are having a positive affect on drunk driving.  He says that statistics show that alcohol related automotive fatalities have declined since the law for the yellow plates has been passed 4 years ago.

Drivers become more careful around cars with yellow plates.  Since the population knows what this means, drivers tend to stay safe distances away from these drivers.
