What if the “victim” and I only had a minor argument?

People are often charged with domestic violence for what appears to be little or no reason or because of a simple argument. This is because domestic violence is a serious concern for many members of the public and as such, prosecutors and lawmakers are under a lot of political pressure to show that they are tough on people who are charged with domestic violence. This pressure may lead to accusations and prosecution in cases where criminal punishment is inappropriate. Even minor disputes may receive attention from police and prosecutors because the alleged “aggressor” was arrested and sent to jail, often without any serious investigation. Even in cases where the victim does not want to press charges, there remains a lot of pressure to continue on with the prosecution in order to protect a scared or timid victim.

Although a case may seem "simple" or “minor” it is important to understand that the effective defense of domestic violence charges requires a full understanding of the nature of the charges, the specific consequences of the charges, and the underlying political pressures surrounding the arrest and prosecution.
