Failure to Comply with Order of Signal of Police Officer

Police officers are invested with the authority to direct, control, and regulate traffic and drivers are required to follow directions or commands given by police officers. This includes stopping a vehicle after receiving a visible or audible signal from an officer. Disregarding the directions or signal of a police officer can lead to a citation for “failure to comply”. Failure to comply is a six-point violation and is usually classified as a first degree misdemeanor, carrying the possible penalties of a fine of up to one thousand dollars and/or up to six months in jail. This violation is sometimes enhanced to a felony charge if the driver was fleeing after the commission of a felony or if the driver caused or risked causing serious harm to persons or property.

A citation for failure to comply can have very serious consequences, including a lengthy driver’s license suspension, expensive fines, and significant jail time. If you have been charged with failure to comply, it is important to contact an experienced Columbus traffic ticket lawyer to fight for your rights and avoid these penalties.
