2007 OACDL Death Penalty Seminar

Lawyers have special duties as guardians of the rule of law. As sworn officers of the court, attorneys have legal and professional obligations to uphold the law and maintain a sense of professionalism. To fulfill these obligations, active members of the Ohio bar are required to attend continuing legal education (CLE) classes in order to maintain and further develop their professional skills. Each attorney must complete a total of twenty four hours of CLE courses every two years and is further required to report the completion of these hours to the Supreme Court. CLE courses are an effective tool in assisting an attorney to maintain, expand, and update his or her knowledge and skills. Continuing education is necessary in order to further attorneys’ efforts in staying updated on developments in the law and enhancing their capabilities in selected areas of practice. It is crucial that members of the bar maintain and cultivate their professional competence.

Annual Death Penalty Seminar

Organizations like the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (OACDL) offer a unique forum through which attorneys can complete required CLE credits. In November of 2007, OACDL hosted their annual Death Penalty Seminar that included instruction and advice from nationally recognized experts and a variety of practical presentations in the area of death penalty litigation. Attorney Douglas A. Funkhouser is a member of OACDL and regularly attends this seminar when it is offered. During this three day seminar, Attorney Douglas A. Funkhouser participated in the discussions, attended a variety of expert panel discussions and obtained information about cutting-edge issues and legal strategies in the area of death penalty law and criminal defense litigation. Topics at the Death Penalty Seminar included:

  • basics of death penalty litigation
  • state and federal law
  • ABA guidelines
  • defending cases with digital evidence
  • challenging identification testimony
  • closing argument strategies
  • victim outreach
  • lethal injection
