Columbus Death Penalty Attorney

The highest form of punishment in the United States is capital punishment, better known as the death penalty. It is an injection of a narcotic that goes straight to the heart and central nervous system of the receiver, killing him or her almost instantaneously. Unlike any other form of punishment- such as prison sentences- the death penalty is completely irreversible. Therefore, it is important that you know all of the facts about how to defend yourself against receiving this punishment in a court of law. Qualified legal professionals can help.

Some people are beginning to feel that the death penalty is a barbaric practice that should not be permitted in civilized countries. Many European countries do not allow criminals to be punished thus, and it is becoming rapidly unpopular in the United States. The following states have abolished or never established the death penalty:

  • Alaska
  • Washington D.C.
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Massachusetts
  • Maine
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • North Dakota
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Rhode Island
  • Vermont
  • Wisconsin
  • West Virginia

If you do not live in one of the aforementioned states and have committed murder. The varying degrees of murder and the severity of their corresponding punishments are determined by each individual state. Those suffering from mental retardation may not legally receive the lethal injection, and in some state, minors under the age of 18 cannot be punished with death.

Suspects who have been accused of murder are held in what is commonly referred to as death row. This is, in some prisons, a special wing where all of the criminals awaiting execution are kept. The prisoners remain here for a lengthy period of time, while they go through their appeals process. This is a series of hearings and stacks of paperwork that must be completed before lethal injection can legally be given. Often, the criminals spend the remainder of their lives on death row, and far more die from natural causes than from the injection. The process is long and extremely costly (another reason for its rising unpopularity), but this can prove to work in your favor. During the appeals process, you may be able to plead for a lighter sentence. However, this can be a very tricky and elaborate system that is best managed by a trained legal specialist.
