2008 Advanced DUI Seminar

Organizations such as the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (OACDL) offer a unique forum through which attorneys complete required CLE credits. On May 6 & 7, 2008, OACDL hosted an Advanced DUI Seminar that included instruction and advice from nationally recognized experts and a variety of practical presentations on DUI law. Topics at the Advanced DUI Seminar included:

  • dealing with tough judges
  • issues surrounding sobriety tests
  • commercial driver’s license issues
  • pre-trial tactics and negotiation
  • using scientific techniques to win cases
  • picking the right DUI jurors
  • successfully challenging urine testing
  • how and when to use expert witnesses

Attorney Douglas A. Funkhouser participated in this seminar. He obtained hands on training in the use of breath machines. Breathalyzer tests are very common in DUI cases. Law enforcement officers typically use the BAC Datamaster machine to do an infrared analysis that determines a driver’s blood alcohol concentration. “Hands on” operation of the breath machines included conducting and assisting with various testing procedures and dealing with common reliability issues that arise with the use of breath tests such as accurate calibration of the instrument and proper administration of the test.
